I had not planned on doing anything for my quarantine birthday.   My friends and family had different plans for me.  To my surprise, my day was filled with phone calls, text messages, FaceBook posts, birthday songs, deliveries, and cash app gifts. Everyone found clever birthday gifts during quarantine, for me. The most surprising gift of all was, a car picnic my daughter secretly planned. 

Since I have only been in close contact with my son and daughter (my daughter quarantined with us for two months and has returned to her home) during this quarantine, my daughter has been allowed to visit.

Birthday Surprise Decoration

On the morning of my birthday, my daughter arrived at my house saying we were going to take a drive.  I was not ready because it was my birthday and I was not going to rush to do anything.  She had not told me what time to expect her.  Aside from that, she knew I had planned on doing absolutely nothing, for once.   I should have known she was up to something because she did not complain that I was not ready.   When she arrived, she told me she thought she lost her wallet in my truck.  After verifying that it was a wallet that I had purchased for her, I was annoyed.  Since it was my birthday, I did not have the energy to help her look for it and I didn’t care.  It was her loss and I would not buy her another gift like that again.

As she “looked” for her wallet, I quickly dressed.   After I was dressed, I went outside to my truck.  I usually have something I want to put in the back, but of course, I didn’t on this day.  As I approached the driver’s side, my son and daughter thought quickly and on their feet.  They both started suggesting I get something out of my truck.  A trunk that only has a can of Lysol, a box of gloves and tissue.  I was thinking, why don’t they get it themselves, but whatever… I opened the trunk to a beautiful car picnic.  I am so glad I did not yell or complain before I opened the door.

My trunk had been transformed into a soft, white, and gold car picnic.

The car picnic included:

• A white down comforter.
• A white sheet with gold stars
• White decorative pillows.
• Lanterns that hung on the back hooks of the trunk.
• Wooden boxes filled with snacks.
• Insulted bags filled with warm food.
• A cooler for cold drinks, fruits, veggies, and other cold foods.
• Paper party glasses, that said, Celebrate.
• Mason jars that said, Happy Birthday Mom.

As I stood surprised and excited, my son and daughter told me we were headed to the beach.   The beach is about 10 minutes from where I live.  My daughter neatly folded everything, so that it would not move around during our drive.  After we found a secluded spot at the beach, she easily unfolded the blanket and opened the back of my truck, and we enjoyed a beautiful day at the beach.

We spent a few hours listening to music, talking, eating, and looking at sea lions in the ocean.  My daughter took a nap.

When I returned home, I thought my day was complete, but deliveries were waiting by my door.

This quarantine birthday was the best!   My friends and family were very thoughtful and creative.  Most of all, I thank my daughter for going out of her way to make this day special.
