Things To Do In Santa Monica With Kids

Winter is in full swing and Ice at Santa Monica is the place to go ice skating!  Over the holidays, my family went ice skating and had a wonderful time.

It really is the place to go ice skating because we ran into an old friend and her family, while we were there.  They live almost two hours away and made a special trip to go ice skating in Santa Monica.

Experience the lasting magic of the holiday season at Ice at Santa Monica, the 8,000-square-foot real outdoor ice-skating rink that makes the beachside community sparkle each year. Santa might have packed up his sleigh for the season, but there is plenty of holiday fun still to be had in this winter wonderland. Glide into the lasting days of festive family fun on the ice rink presented by The Plaza at Santa Monica open daily now through January 20, 2020.

New this year, Ice Breakers presented by The Plaza at Santa Monica is a free live music series accompanying Ice at Santa Monica. Every Sunday through January 19, enjoy eclectic, family-friendly musical performances from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. next to Ice. Upcoming performances include the local Santa Monica Youth Orchestra and the infectious Las Cafeteras on January 12, and Latin-inspired singer-songwriter Caro Pierotto and a 3-part harmony of American folk songs from the 1960s by Cindy Paley & The Folk Experience on January 19. Ice Breakers shows are free and open to the public. Ice skating admission is $15 for all-day skate rental.

My family visited on a Saturday, so we missed the Sunday live music.   Although we missed the live music, there was still music playing as some of us whizzed around the rink and others fell on their bottoms.

It had been about two years since we had gone ice skating.  Over the years, it has been a holiday and winter activity that we look forward to.   When we initially hit the ice, it was obvious that we had not been ice skating in a while.   My son quickly familiarized himself with the ice.  As he zipped around the rink, my daughter spent a great deal of time trying to find a skate that was suitable for her feet, because they do not come in half sizes.  We know to bring extra socks when we go ice skating, just in case we run into this problem.   After we were all settled with the right ice skate, the three of us skated in circles, laughing and talking.

Every time we go ice skating, my son always stays on the ice rink longer than me and my daughter.   He can skate all day and night if I would allow him to do so.   On this particular night, he wanted me to record him skating.  When I shared the video with him, he was disappointed.  He thought he was skating faster and more graceful than he was.   As he watched the videos he would say, “Delete!”   I could not stop laughing.

Ice at Santa at Santa Monica offers things to do in Santa Monica with kids of all ages.   My son is 14-years-old and my daughter is 25-years-old and we had a blast!

There is still time to enjoy the winter fun.
