Have you ever been disturbed by something and try not to look at it, but you find yourself going back to it to take a peek? Well Mother, Mother by Koren Zailckas, did that to me.
What seems like a normal family turns out to be a family being torn apart. Josephine is a stay at home mom, that has two daughters ( Rose & Violet), a son (Will) and a husband (Douglas) that seems to be a decent provider. Josephine has to control every aspect of their lives. She believes this is the definition of perfection. Her misperception of love and family is destroying her family mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Her daughter Rose runs off with a mysterious boyfriend. Her daughter Violet becomes resentful and jealous of her sister for leaving her in their hell hole, turns to Eastern philosophy, hallucinogenic drugs, and fasting, that lands her in a psych ward. Her son Will is diagnosed with Asperger’s and is being homeschooled by this lunatic. While all of this was going on her husband is not a strong enough man to stand up to her, so he turns to drinking and working with hopes of escaping her.
All the while I was hoping for someone to save these people. When an incident occurs and Child Protective Services steps in I began to think there was hope.
There were a few predictable moments, but I was able to get passed them. I did want to keep reading more.
Mother, Mother is well written and insightful. This unsettling thriller reveals a side of relationships with a mother and her children that is not often written. Be prepared to be disturbed.
