The Calico Mine Ride, Knott’s first major ride, opened in Ghost Town in November 1960 and was quickly recognized as one of the world’s most immersive “dark rides.” The beloved attraction designed by industry pioneer- Bud Hurlbut, carries riders aboard ore cars, on a realistic adventure through dimly lit tunnels of a working gold mine. The winding journey takes passengers to underground lakes, waterfalls, caverns filled with thousands of mysterious formations, chambers filled with steaming, bubbling pots, and geysers. At several points in the trip, riders find themselves along the rim of a sixty-five foot deep and ninety-foot wide scene filled with dozens of animated miners trying to strike it rich.
My family loves this ride. It educates you on mining, and we just love the narration as we ride along. The last time we were on this ride we got off trying to speak like the narrator. This is when you think of Knotts as a fun history theme park as well.
If you are like us, you do not want to miss out on all of the fun and witness of the revamping Knotts is doing. I have been going to Knotts since I was a child and have heard my mother speak of Knotts in her day, Knotts is now modernizing somethings, but keeping the traditional Knotts flare. There is truly something there for children of all ages. I cannot wait to see and experience the newly revamped Camp Snoopy and the Reopening of Calico Mine Co.
